What Is Best In Life?

BREAKING: Arnold Schwarzenegger will play “Conan The Barbarian” one more time.

Honestly? If he can get into the best possible shape and they play it as “old Conan” either way, this makes a lot more sense than another “Terminator.” I just hope they don’t make the mistake of assuming that forgoing a PG-13 was what “went wrong” with last year’s awful attempt at a reboot…

John Milius was the main reason the original Conan was great. Now if they can get him back and involved with this new movie as well as Arnie then I think they could have something. Without him(either directing or guiding as a producer) I'm still not sold.

The 1982 Conan is one of my favourite movies ever, and the score is definitely in my top 3 film scores of all time. And as a self-contained story it's magnificent. It also has almost nothing to do with the source material beyond sharing a few character and place names. So I'm not sure what to think of this. The Conan the King stories tend to be some of the least compelling ones for me. They're basically “Conan does the same shit he always did, and suffers no repercussions for his absence from the throne.” I never liked fantasy stories that gave the heroes positions of authority, and then ignored all the responsibilities of their new positions for the sequel.

And I did like Momoa. He was saddled with a shitty script and direction, but his turn at Conan was closer to the Conan of the Robert E. Howard stories and especially, the Marvel comics. I wish he'd been given a decent movie to really show his chops. Alas.

The article mentions a reboot, but what's wrong with keeping it in continuity with the old movies? The whole “king by his own hand” era in Aquilonia is much more fitting for Schwarzenegger's current age and I'd love to see a “They kidnapped your son!” type of story that remains just as family-unfriendly as the original. Lofty dreams, I know, especially since they'd likely portray Conn as all kinds of annoying.

Conan is old hat. If they wanted to spice it up, why not bring back the H.P. Lovecraft connection? Yes, I know, even the original authors realized it was stupid and lopped it off… but they're long dead and Hollywood does worse desecration of other people's IP, so why not?
