"Upside Down" Trailer

Happy New Stuff!

Do you enjoy science-fiction movies that employ an elaborate visual-effect and/or worldbuilding-conceit to make a really, really heavy-handed societal point? Then you’ll want to reserve your seat for “Upside Down,” a French-produced English-language film with Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst as star-crossed lovers inhabiting a pair of alternate worlds seperated not by dimension but by gravity – his world is essentially the “floor” below her’s which is the reverse-gravity “ceiling” above his. Are you wondering if “above world” is ostensibly wealthy-looking while “below world” is working-class? How’d you guess?

Whaaaaaaaa? That's the most friggin insane premise I've seen since … I don't even know when!

So I guess Kirsten Dunst was cast in this because she's most famous for kissing Spider-Man upside down? Who knew there would be a gap in the market for that talent?

I think this actually looks pretty cool. Sure the concept may be obvious, but sometimes how a movie works a concept is more important than what that concept is.

Hey, I'm all for science fiction/fantasy with unique world-building ideas. Not so much heavy handed social commentary. Or social commentary at all really.

I find the idea awesome, I just hope that “class” doesn't really factor into it.

Well, so long as the movie is upfront about being heavy handed, you can decide to accept it before you got see it.

Unlike the happening, which also had heavy-handed social commentary, but it came out the closet at the least expected moment and said “boo!”

While the concept itself is interesting, I can't help but feel that they should've done a lot more with it. I mean come on In Time did a similar and that movie was a released a couple of months ago. Who knows, maybe I'll be surprised or something.

I just watched it again and I realised how many shots there are of Dunst and Sturgess standing the same way up. I now predict that 95% of the film will have everyone standing the same way up, with only the odd establishing shot here and there to remind you of the premise. There's even a scene where they dance in a ballroom and, if the trailer's anything to go by, that's it… a ballroom dance. Think what crazy Cirque du Soleil shit you could do if you were dancing with someone who's gravity was the opposite of yours? It could have been really spectacular in the right hands, but no, it seems like everyone is just standing the same way up most of the time. Maybe they're saving the good stuff for the film itself… I doubt it though.

The trailer looks interesting, but I've got to say it'd ring better with me if they went more hardcore sci-fi with the premise, which is annoying because it'd be easy to do: A cylindrical space colony using centrifugal force as a means to simulate gravity. Sure you wouldn't get the surreal “upside down offices” thing but it'd make the story much more believable, and allow for a better commentary on social divides. (I.E. The workers who keep the colony running live on one side of the cylinder while the richer classes live on the opposite side “above” them.

    @ John

Wouldn't have to be cylindrical…the earth on either side would just need to be slightly concave, like a piece of sheet metal bent along one axis, then people wouldn't fall off sideways.

I think maybe you're onto something with the space station theory…maybe the people from either side live on a generation ship with polarized, targeted gravity. That's why the man maintains his gravititional attraction even after he passes accross to the other side. He probably needs rocks in his shoes, and I can't believe he isn't consistently redfaced…although I suppose maybe everybody's blood is somehow exempt from gravity, which, if you can use targeted polarized monodirectional gravity probably isn't a ridiculous assumption.

Whatever the technobabble reason, the concept is still pretty cool.
