Below, the Red Band trailer for “Evil Dead,” which looks about like you’d expect: New kids, new cabin, same basic “Deadites” (though they were called that in the original and I don’t expect they’ll be called that here) and a modern-looking horror aesthetic…
Thus far, I like it. It’s continuing to look like a smart decision to not necessarily make someone “The Ash” in the direct sense – remember, Ash in the first movie wasn’t really “Ash” as we’ve come to remember him.
Honestly, my biggest worry about this and any other “serious” kids-in-the-woods horror film is that “Cabin in The Woods” may have permanently put the genre to bed – I just don’t know that I’ll be able to take ANY of this remotely seriously without thinking back to how perfectly it was parodied (and then used for greater purposes) there. We’ll see.

personally I'm not really liking the deadites weird new self harm fetish, it's actually kinda reminiscent of the Buckner's from Cabin in the Woods IMO, glad they kept the tree rape though (sarcasm there at the end, I don't think we really NEEDED CGI tree rape)

This looks really boring. Everything seems to be played completely straight and gone is the low-budget, “let's see what we can do with this” charm of the original and the far-out goofiness of the second one.
Raimi really pulled a Kobayashi Maru with the originals, in the sense that he got a pass for so much insanity because it hadn't been tried before. Today, tree rape would (and probably should) provoke an outcry of some sort, but back in the day, everyone just tilted their heads and went “uuuh, what?!” Kinda like the liver “donation” in Monty Python's Meaning of Life.

I fear the film is taking itself too seriously. The campy tone is what set the original apart from a sea of cliche horror films. This one doesn't seem to understand that and is setting it self afloat in that very same sea of cliche. I hope I am wrong but I am afraid I am right.

This looks terrible. They seem to be trying their hardest to make this the goriest and most extreme bloodfest ever… and I don't care. The original movie wasn't campy like some people say, it was simply one of the most legitimately scary movies I have ever seen. Why do we need to do it again? Can it be improved? NO. Will I like this movie no matter what they do with it? FUCK NO.

I had the same thoughts about this remake as Bob. Cabin in the Woods made the idea of redoing Evil Dead seem redundant. I just didn't see the point.
Well, that was before I saw the trailer. Bring that shit on. That looks awesome.

Okay, with the obligatory hipster dick-swinging out of the way, this actually looks pretty damn good. Whoever said this doesn't get the camp of the original either hasn't seen the original in a while or couldn't get past the age block to see this trailer.
Don't buy the CitW comparison either. First off, the BSDM guys were obvious riffs of Hellraiser, not Evil Dead. Whoever wrote that shit needs to turn in their horror geek card. Second it actually makes a whole lot of sense. Adds a slight bit of dimension overall to the paper-thin basic concept of exorcist zombies that really had no consistency to begin with in ANY of the original films ALL while still allowing for some of the 'camp' that someone clearly couldn't see in this.

I'm…ambiguous. Right now, it looks like every other horror movie. In fact, this trailer looks a bit too much like a shitty Platinum Dunes remake. I hope I'm dead wrong, and Raimi's involvement keeps me hopeful, but I'm still on the fence.
I'm kind of surprised Raimi left the tree rape in, considering he later regretted it in the original because of the outcry at the time. Maybe time has made that scene too iconic to cut.

Huh… I don't really know what to make of this. On one hand, it looks like they are at least trying to distance themselves from the original and make it stand on its own as a horror film, while still keeping the basic story intact as well as paying lip service to the original. On the other hand though, that's kind of what worries me. It just looks like every other piece of shit horror movie remake that Michael Bay crapped out all throughout the last decade. I could be wrong though and I've got enough trust in Sam Raimi to at least go and see it once it comes out, but all I'll say is that if they abandon the campy tone of the original movies and go for a completely dead serious tone I'll be fucking pissed. Say what you will about the first movie actually trying to take itself seriously, it had goddamn tree-rape. You can't have something like that in a movie and not think to yourself “Just how seriously should I be taking this?”
Also, I completely agree with you about Cabin in the Woods, Bob. No matter how good or bad this movie might be, all I'm going to be able to think about is Hadley and Sitterson sitting in the control room saying “OK, let's see some boobies.”

Huh, I actually thought the trailer was wrong and this WAS a trailer from “Cabin in the Woods” for the first twenty seconds. I think I'm alright with the idea of it being a remake, since it clearly is not even trying to be anything like the original. I'll wait for reviews.

IMO, the problem with horror remakes is that they're made by hacks who are just regurgitating the past – only with more blood, more flash, more effects, more budget and with all the invention, intelligence, wit, meaning and excitement completely lobotomised. Especially since there barely are any horror remakes worth a damn: The Amityville Horror (Good Lord…), The Hitcher (rubbish), Friday the 13th (sucks balls), A Nightmare on Elm Street (godawful), Prom Night (rubbish), Last House on the Left (pointless), Black Christmas (pointless), Let Me In (pointless)…Probably the worst of the bunch is the remake and remake-prequel of The Texas Chainwas Massacre: BOTH those movies are shameful, horrible, abominable, sadistic, stupid, dumb, boring, unpleasantly leery cash-ins on the legacy of the original.
Now, granted, I'll give you Zack Snyder's (vacuous) Dawn of the Dead and Alexander Aja's (passable) The Hills Have Eyes as more-or-less good horror remakes (but Hills Have Eyes 2 was rubbish), and even Rob Zombie's Halloween movies are actually quite fascinating, if far from great. But yeah, with horror remakes, it just feels like a bunch of accountants are going through all the classics and treasured gems of our youth and dumbing them down spreadsheet-style…

it looks…pretty forgettable. However, Diablo Cody at the very least proved that she wasn't just a one-hit wonder when she did the script for Young Adult, so that's something.

I'm really excited about this one. Don't get me wrong I love the original trilogy, But it does have its issues.
Evil Dead clearly had more vision then means.
Evil Dead 2 is what I'd consider the best but has always confused fans do to it half remake half sequel beginning.
As for Army of Darkness I think what bother me most about it is that it drops the horror from the first two films and replaces it with campy fantasy action.
I like the idea of a true horror remake of The Evil Dead. I also love Body Horror and this looks really fucked up in terms of that.
I just hope they don't try to slap some Ash type character just for the sake of having one. The scene from the trailer with the girl cutting her “possessed?” arm off with the electric knife seems to ring a little too close to Ash in Evil Dead 2.
But overall it looks better then expected.

All I did was ask why you have such animosity for people who hate horror movie remakes and yes, I was being catty in my initial comment because all you had to say was quite literally “Fuck the remake haters.” I could have been much more dismissive and vitriolic in my response, but I was and still am genuinely interested why you have such hate for “remake haters”. But, I suppose I should probably clarify my opinion on remakes first.
To start, I am not someone who will immediately jump on the “RAR, REMAKES BAD!!!11!!1” bandwagon because I don't agree that a remake of a movie is immediately bad based solely on that merit. I actually enjoy Snyder's remake of “Dawn of the Dead” quite a bit and even like Platinum Dunes' take on “Nightmare on Elm Street” (though that probably is mostly because of Jackie Earle Haley as Freddie). My point is that I have an open mind on these things and will not automatically assume something is shit simply because it happens to be a remake.
HOWEVER…
Like Fallen Angel stated above, the main problem with remakes and why so many people have issue with them is because (for the most part) they almost always are the result studio executives simply trying to make a quick buck by cashing in on the nostalgia of an established property. Also, they tend to neglect the stories of their respective properties and focus instead on amping up the blood, gore, jump scares and tittays. Also, the market is now flooded with dime a dozen horror remakes and original stories and ideas seem to be getting less and less opportunity for production.
So there, that's more or less my feelings on horror remakes in a nutshell. If you have any response to my opinions, all I ask is that you please respond with a modicum of civility. Peace ^_^b

The Evil Dead was one of the best horror movies ever made in my opinion. It had a great sense of dread and horror with characters you actually became concerned for. You really didn't know what the hell was going on and that created a fear of the unknown. This one is obviously is trying to put the whole story of the deadites or whatever into the movie where it really doesn't need it. Not knowing the monster creates the greatest fear. This just looks horribly generic and dumb. This movie is going to be Dead by Dawn! Ha see what I did there?! See!
Also question! Where is there a communal shower in the middle of the woods? Look at 0:43. Where is she?! This is going to drive me crazy!

I probably have no business expressing my opinion because, well, I hate horror movies in general and will probably not go see this. But, as a Uruguayan, I'm glad that we finally have a talented Uruguayan working in Hollywood. Ataque de Panico was awesome as is loved here.

This seems really cool and has some great visuals…but I'm sorry, after seeing CinW I just can't picture anything else but the behind-the-scenes. At least THAT movie explained why they read from the EVIL OBJECT OF EVIL. In this trailer it just looks crazy stupid. I know, I know, it's probably motivated…but augh.

I like how nobody has a similar mind to the comment above him, it's like the “spirit of the original Evil Dead” is not an actual thing.
Not gonna rgue myself being the end-all-be-all expert on ED, though, all I remember is tree rape, body horror and a shitload of practical effects gore from the first one while I had a quick lunch, thus so far, this movie is faithful to the original to me.

As much as I love the original Trilogy. I am really interested in seeing how this modern version plays out.
Yes, Raimi's vision was a bit more campy due to the limited budget. If Red Band can tell the same basic story and scare the shit out of people, I welcome their attempt. As Brian Molko says, “imitation is the highest form of flattery.” I think the trailer looks great and I wish this a successful opening.
As for the tree rape: yes, it is grotesque, but it was part of the original and I am all about it. Tree Rape > Honey Boo Boo shit.
