NOTHING came out this week worth doing a show about, so “The Escapist” put me on-assignment to do a flashback-ish thing for “Heavy Metal.”

Loved your HM review (or, well, whatever you call your EttM segments that aren't specifically about recent movies), but I'm still a little miffed that you didn't look at The Princess and the Frog. I'm as big an old-school animation nerd as they come, and I really wanted to hear your thoughts about it.
Also, every time you put Mulder and Scully in one of your videos, my world gets a little brighter. Well, except for your I Want To Believe review. That one made me sad.

Speaking as an 18-year-old who saw this a year or 2 ago, yeah, this was disappointing. I agree with you on most of the video (especially with regards to music usage), although I will say I enjoyed the sequel slightly more. Probably had something to do with having a single cohesive story (although the animation and the metal music pretty much sucked).
I'm definitely curious about the proposed 3rd movie, though.

Good review. I still get a kick out of this movie and watch it a couple times a year.
To any HM fans I'd also recommend a 1984 animated film called Rock & Rule that I recently rediscovered. It has excellent animation, a good soundtrack, and a much better story than Heavy Metal. It's also a movie that I as a third grader in the mid 80s felt like I was getting away with something by watching late at night on cable. Adult themes, sexual innuendo, drugs, death, and bad language just weren't seen in animation in those days.

As someone whose teenage years took place in the early days of the internet, I believe I have experienced both the difficulty of finding old Playboys and being bored to tears by cheesy midnight movies expecting to see a boob or two, just as in my later years I could simply type “boob” on google and get the same result.
But, I must say, Heavy Metal was a pretty enjoyable movie for me, regardless of how little appeal a topless scene now has – after all, paracinema fans might get into a movie for the sex scenes, but what we remember afterwards is the cheesy dialogue, the outrageous plots and the wooden acting that we remember. And, wasn't the plots, artstyle and music what we all remember from Heavy Metal, after all?

Funny, since Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis both admitted in the DVD extras that Heavy Metal was just an excuse to get titties on the screen.
Yeah, it's kind of a guilty pleasure for me.
Plus, I miss Daria.

Very interesting review, just saw the movie after the review so i had some prejudices. I'm also 17 now so google searching boob has been a habit for about 7 years now, since i haven't lived without this ability i never searched for old playboys in my parents 'not for you!' closet..
still good review though, gave me a reason to see it, although u where right about the movie, the animation still amazed me, i love the style they use.

yeah… some of the original stories aren't bad and there's a good showcase of john candy's voice talents, as he's like 4 or 5 different voices, in that thing. but, it's kind of fun to watch in a nostalgia kind of way. guess i was lucky, i had my own tv and cinemax on cable (before satellite dishes were common place! when they were huge, 5,000 dollar monsters, in the back yard!), when i was a teenager.
but i have to say, when you see this as a horny, somewhat confused 14 year old, when there was no internet porn, it tends to speak to you.
it was also the same time i saw vampire hunter d, for the first time. my first launch into japanese animation that wasn't on saturday morning (before animated shows sent off to korea, because korea is cheaper than japan, now).

Well, being female, I never really had the boob-hunt issue despite being of that era. Never really hugely enjoyed HM either (for the same reason, I'd think) except as a sort of anthropological artifact to study.
Still, as always, your review is dead on and very funny. Well done Bob.

Hey Bob, liked the review of Heavy Metal, though it's style is starting to blend heavily with your game overthinker episodes. Just thought I'd point that out.
Also, nothing out worth reviewing?
Might I suggest one movie that's out right now that had me wanting to watch it again immediately after it finished.
That film is The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. The latest by (usually far from my favorite) director Terry Gilliam. The grime he places in his worlds, and the nonchalant meandering of his scripts are usually a huge turn off for me but this movie was incredible.
Really worth giving it a look because it's one of those movies that the world is going to forget about if people like us don't give it credit. It's an amazing piece of surrealist work.

This year of movies might be good hopefully and if not 2011 is going to have alot of movies for the comic book geeks like spider-man4,Thor,Green Lantern, and Captian America and not counting delays.

Brave enough to do this one. It was kind of funny as well, even though I don't normally like things that make fun of what i like but well… Next time try adding Viagra on the mix, it turns out very well believe me.
