It's not the end of the world Mr. Chipman! I'm sure they won't screw it up! Sure this is a slight misstep, but at least he's still writing the screenplay, right? Hell, we don't even know who the new director is going to be. I mean, it's not like they're going to put Bay at the helm now. Why don't you just lie back, and speculate on who you think should take over?

wow this sucks alot… but I do have faith in Peter Jackson so I trust he will find a suitable replacement… Mr. Jackson now would be the time to jump on board as the director yourself, like should have been the case from the get go… wishful thinking i suppose.

Hmm, it's like a slightly shorter and more varied version of the column Spider Jerusalem wrote after the Beast was elected as President of the USA. (That's from 'Transmetroplitan' if you haven't read it, which you should.)

Well, that news sucks. Even though the page won't load, I can tell what it is just from reading the link title.

Frankly I'm surprised by how many people care about this prequel. The story was recapped in 2 minutes in FoTR. Biblo found ring, fought dragon. Or whatever.

This frees up Del Toro to do that Dr. Strange movie we all want him to do. :p

Oh, man… My older brother -who's a hardcore Tolkien nut- isn't gonna be happy about this. He might also end up having a similar reaction to you, Bob.

What is the big deal about Platinum Dunes doing TMNT? Yeah, it'll suck, but can we honestly take the nostalgia goggles off for a second and remember that TMNT has never been a deep high-quality product…it was a cheesy kids show that occupied my childhood and was fun to watch, but it's also something of the past, not a grand property demanding a careful touch. If a remake ruins your memories than that's really on you.

Besides, villify Platinum Dunes all you want, but Bruckheimer is a lot worse for American cinema than Michael Bay.

finally you say….. all the both the hell boy movies sucked ass, and i cant really see him making up for those 2 pieces of crap with Hell boy 3, never even heard of that other thing. The Hobbit would have made him even more popular than he already is. i think this is a big mistake on his part. but hopefully Peter Jackson can find someone else or even just do it himself like he should be anyways.

I wish I could say this surprised me, but given how long this Project's been in Development compared to how much work's actually been successfully done on it, this really is the inevitable outcome. Truly a shame, as I would've loved to have seen a del Toro-directed “Hobbit”. My sincerest hope is that Jackson DOES NOT replace him as Director, though. I loved his “Lord of the Rings” films, of course, but I simply do not know that Jackson can approach Middle Earth from a new angle seperate from “Rings”, and make no mistake, that is what “The Hobbit” requires.

ah man, it's not that i'm a hardcore tolkien fan or anything – a fan, but not a hardcore fan – but del Toro would have rocked this. maybe on the bright side he can spend the time making a follow-up to the Devil's Backbone/Pan's Labyrinth kind of thing..

so yes, bummer, but yes, you are certainly overreacting, my friend!

I am so glad. Really, huge load off my chest. The only films I can stand that Guillermo del Toro has touched in any way are Mimic and Blade 2, both mediocre at best.

I'm so happy I won't have to deal with this guy's grubby little fingers all up in The Hobbit.

I'm with you Bob. I am a huge Tolkien fan and that was my reaction the moment I heard the news. Silver Linign, Del Toro can work on his other products.

As for Platinum Dunes on TMNT, that is also depressing. The Ninja Turtles may not be the deepest franchise, but the comics and TMNT2K3 were well written and imaginative. The Original Movie is one of my favourite movies of all time too. This was not a good day.
