and the fandom rejoiced

Independent filmmaker Eddie Lebron, whom you may remember from the pretty-solid feature length “Mega Man” Fan-Film last year, has formally announced his production of a “Sonic the Hedgehog” Fan-Film.

The best parts of “Mega Man” were Lebron’s grasp of action, scene composition, not-bad-at-all use of visual effects and clever narrative compromises toward realizing the game in live-action (and on a budget) so the notion of him tackling a feature built around a main character (and presumably several others) realized wholly through CGI is encouraging as far as I’m concerned. The BIG news, of course, is who he’s landed to provide Sonic’s voice…

    When I heard this, I was in awe. Jaleel White, eh? Make it work and make it happen. Now, will Sega step in and put the kibosh on it due to copyright law? Maybe not, but I wouldn't put it past the cartoon developers from trying….and failing.

    Good call, Mr. Lebron.

    @Dave

    You do realize that in addition to voicing Sonic in the coathanger abortion known as “The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog” he ALSO voiced Sonic in the SatAM show? So there is in fact genuine reason to celebrate this coup of Mr. Lebron and his crew.

    @ peter. the fact that he was in a good show does not mean he was good in it. His voice is grating on an animated zelda level of annoying. There are far better voice actors within the anime abridging community.

    Yes, but he WAS good in it. He was fantastic, and every American voice actor to play Sonic has pretty much taken their cues from his performance.

    As for me, I just got a severe case of priapism that I don't think I'll ever recover from. This is the coolest thing I've ever heard. This is, way past cool. There I said it. Mega Man, was a PHENOMINAL film, and I can not wait til this is out. I'm going to throw as much money as sanity and circumstance will allow behind this film.

    Ehhhh. Good for them getting the right voice actor, but I think you'd need a pretty big budget to pull Sonic off… not only are most of the characters CG, but you've got all those high-speed chase and stunt scenes to do. And I really don't think it's going to work if they put CG animals in amongst live-action people. Still, it sounds like he's pretty confident so maybe he can do it on an indie budget.
