My favorite “Donald Duck” cartoon ever, also my go-to clip to refute the whole “only Goofy holds up today” thing i.e. Disney shorts. I love how minimal the setup is – as though Donald and the Nephews exist in a permanent state of antagonism. If I had had the kind of ridiculous snow we’ve had here this year when I was, say, 10… I’d have probably contracted serious hypothermia trying to recreate this stuff…
Even today, the quality of the animation on these things blows my mind, especially considering it’s ALL oldschool ink-and-paint stuff. And you can tell the animators had a field-day playing around with the physics of snow/ice/water – I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that was the whole reason for doing the cartoon itself.
I'm not aware of the “only Goofy hods up today” stuff. Are people really saying that?
If it they are… wow, talk about missing a lot of good stuff, and not just Donald, even the old Mickey cartoons, before he turned intro the straight two goodie shoes (before they started to paint his face with skin color). A lot of stuff in Disney's golden age is great and hold pretty well. And not to be the gramps, but it's WAAAAAYYY better than anything disney is putting out nowdays… That is, when they are actually making cartoons and not those god-awful kids sit-coms or those non singers like Hanna-Montana or the Jonas Brothers.

That was rather nostalgic. I personally like the Hitler episode the best.

@Lucas: I think the films that Pixar makes can stand up to the classic Disney films. Excluding Cars of course.

I've always been confused by the wooden walkway that Donald's coat uncovers as he makes his way up the hill in the beginning. Were those common in the '40s? Is it a gag that goes over my head?
Regardless, a pretty good cartoon, only losing its charm by being far too overplayed back in The Day, second only to the one where Donald & nephews try to escape a loose gorilla.

I've never heard “Only Goofy stands up today”, is this in terms of animation, story, gags, what have you? Either way it seems fairly ridiculous.
The entirety of Carl Barks Duckverse is incredible, whether it be the animations, the comics or the legacy he left behind. I'd think just about everyone could appreciate something in there; whether it's the enduring legacy of the inspiring and kind of tragic Scrooge McDuck as adventurer, business tycoon (and unfortunately robber baron)) or Donald the hapless everyman, or just the adventuresome spirit of the nephews and the world as a whole. There's got to be something for everyone in there.

I had actually seen this before, but I can't remember when or where.
Also I find it interesting that Donald still goes pantless in the dead of winter

What a classic, this one was actually played on TV a lot when I was a kid, mostly during christmas.
I'm reading through Richard Williams Animators Survival Kit right now, this short, along with a few others gets referenced a few times actually.

I love that cartoon, and pretty much any Disney duck cartoon.
I also express confusion at the “Only Goofy holds up today”. When did this become a thing?

Yeah, Pixar is great and all, but they are not quite Disney. Disney ows Pixar now, but they still want to make sure that Pixar studios works are they own, given that there are the Disney movies like Tangled and then there are the Pixar ones, they make sure to make that distinction clear.
And to be honest, regarding the theatrical releases of the Disney movies, the House of Mouse showed some good stuff, like Atlantis, Lilo and Stich, The Princess and the Frog, and even Tangled was ok, it's way better thant the late 70's, late 90's early 00's Disney.
But their other products, like animated series, shorts, and again, investing a lot of effort in those god-awful pretty teens artists wannabe, it sucks, plain and simple. But it's from Hanna Montanas where Disney get their money from…
Man I just wish they don't drop 2D animation at all. I mean Japanese animation films are ok and all, and I like Hayao Miyazaki movies (er… some of them, can't stand a coulpe ones) But even the Japanese production is slowing down on 2d. COme on, don't let this art die you guys!
