I do always remember what an epic treat it was to see the Zelda toon back in those days. Makes me wonder why they haven't done another Zelda toon of some kind.
Kinda seems like this should be an episode of gameoverthinker. you know just a small think that has you think a bit about the effect these things had at the time. But now the chance is lost. Overthinker marathon time!
Wasn't there a part during a live-action segment of the Mario show where Ellie-May Clampet of 'The Beverly Hillbillies' came out, and she was dressed like she was- back in the day, and Mario & Luigi were carrying on like she was still young and hot but she totally wasn't?
I really dug this episode, mostly because I enjoyed the super show series, and Captain N, and the Mario Brothers 3 and World series. In fact, it was some of the first dvds I picked up for myself. Video Games and Cartoons were my two big loves in the 80s as a kid. They brought them together to give me this, and boy was I happy. I'll never forget them. Of course, they aren't something to watch over and over, but it is something to expose to one's kids, in my opinion.
That said, if this idea does bleed into TGO, make it an episode about Video Game cartoon adaptations all across the board. Mario, Zelda, Captain N, Pokemon, Bubsy, Battletoads, Street Fighter, Double Dragon, Mortal Kombat, etc. I feel it's something that can be covered on a larger scale.
yeah, I also thought Ugtar was an obnoxious little fucker who had no place in the World cartoon (I wasn't too fond of their depiction of Yoshi nor the art style, in comparison to the previous two shows, either). However, I do think the Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon is just as worthy of mention as the Super Show. Aside from following its predecessor's trend of sound effects and re-orchestrated music from the game, the setting was even more in-tune to the game's setting (as opposed to made-up locales), not to mention the Koopalings expanding the cast (and making for quite a few hilarious moments, like when they each take over a continent in the real world). There were a few low points (the feature songs were kinda… yeah), but overall, this is probably the most faithful American production of a Japanese game you'll ever find.
Also, to be honest, I thought the best part of the Mario cartoons were their ability to give character to the people outside of the game. If you notice, Luigi is usually afraid in the Super Show cartoon, and is also very timid, if not scared, in the games starting mostly from Luigi's Mansion.
Thanks for this, Bob. A rush of childhood memories came flooding back after watching this, especially when you used “Do the Mario!” as your credits music instead of that film noir-esque riff.
Honestly, I will occasionally try to find episodes of the “Super Mario Bros. Super Show” on YouTube and watch them when I feel the need for some nostalgia. Funnily enough, the last episode I watched was that “The Toad Warrior” one you mentioned. Toad sure kicked some Koopa shell in that one, eh? 😀

So, in turn, the cartoons, comics, etc. weren't useless, needless, or totally wasteful. That's the biggest contribution they gave to the games: some sort of character development.
Wow. When I heard you say “Moonlighting” the first thing I thought of was “that stupid show my English teacher made us watch after reading Taming of the Shrew.” And then you mentioned Taming of the Shrew. Man, those must have been the days, says the high school senior girl.
