Hey, I've been reading for about two years now and I have been keeping a few blogs of my own. We have a good deal in common and I was wondering if you'd be interested in a collaboration of some kind. I couldn't find another way to get in touch with you, so I thought I'd give this a shot.
This is a great series and you're doing some really good work.
This actually had me thinking that writers are using the wrong allegory to compare the games industry and film industry. People keep waiting for our Citizen Kane, but in truth I think we might have already had it without realizing it.
I mean, the collapse of the studio system sounds a bit like the video game crash, and the rise of new comers bringing in a new and imaginary vision sounds a bit like…well, basically from the release of the NES to the dominance of the SNES and Genesis.
What do you know, both games and film are in a major mass-market creative slump, where it is too expensive to make everything and thus they go for the least risk. Yet video games are seeing a bit of a push back with (quality) Indie games becoming more prominent.
Unfortunately, I do feel that film has an advantage in terms of budget. I feel like in this day and age you can make a lot of quality films on a low budget and no one will care. You can have a deep and meaningful experience, a horror, a comedy, etc. Yet indie titles are usually more limited, and more so they limit themselves (why aren't we seeing more games like Chrono Trigger and Earthbound? Why are most indie RPG's small or in the parody style?).
Still, it's an interesting push, and I am curious what happens both with the film and games industry in the future.
Bob, I am showing these to my teenage children as they have lived outside the US, but are all going back. A truly wonderful look into our cultural history.
