"Super Best Friends Forever." Watch. Now.

Via The Mary Sue:

Warner Bros., as has been well-established, doesn’t have a fucking clue how to turn any DC Comics property that isn’t Batman into a movie and/or TV show. Fortunately, their new “DC Nation” animation bloc will continue their proud tradition of contracting the work out to people who DO give a damn. Below, Lauren Faust – late of “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” – and company debut the first installment of their mini-sode miniseries featuring Supergirl, Batgirl and Wondergirl.

Supergirl essentially filling the Melissa McCarthy “Bridesmaids” spot (re: kinda-chubby impulsive troublemaker) is all kinds of inspired – of course she’d be impulsive, she’s indestructable! And why would someone who just flies everywhere have/need the Romanian gymnast physique of the other two?

    What you mean is that Warner Bro's forgot how to make a good non-Batman DC movie/show. The Justice League show done by Timm and Dini was amazing. They just forgot that you can't just throw comic book iconography onto a generic story and expect people to watch it.

    I do love giving the comic properties to people who don't have to get bogged down by all the current comic stuff.

    Also, something about women writing women characters = gold. Who knew?

    I don't think it's fat. When you're drawing a very stylized, yet muscular girl, you really want to avoid detailing the muscles.

    In fact, it's a bit of an unofficial rule in comics that the more detail a girl has on her, the less “cute” she is.

    @Mack,

    ::nerd-hat goes on::

    Generally, Kryptonian's nigh-invulnerability only extends as far as things that are physically “of this Earth.” Since WW's weaponry and other powers either derive-from or are imbued-with magic, she can actually injure/defeat them.

    Schway. The only thing this is missing is a bit at the end with Lex discovering his teepee-ed lair. For bonus points make it look like his museum-ish Silver Age lair with that statue on top.

    Kinda wish Supergirl looked like that in the comics now. Not many BBW in the DC Universe, especially since Amanda Waller & Etta Candy thinned down.

    Hey, a woman wrote a comic book…sketch I guess (this was 2 steps away from being a Robot Chicken Sketch) and it was really good.

    Can we get a Gail Simone written Secret Six movie now?

    I'm genuinely shocked no one's brought up the fact that Tara Strong is REPRISING her role as Batgirl; she played the character for the “New Batman Adventures/Gotham Knights” phase of “Batman:The Animated Series”.

    As for the short itself, it's solid stuff. I do genuinely wish it had more space to unwind-the Faust/McCracken house of story-telling does great things with decompression-but accepting that this is all the block allows for, it's a lot of fun. Good design work, GREAT voice-acting, and a script that manages to communicate each character's individual personalities AND dynamics with each other succinctly and effectively. The animation's a liiiitle stiff, admittedly, but never harmfully so. Definitely looking forward to more of these.

    Love this and the Teen Titans shorts.

    The upside to WB not giving a shit about their DC acquisitions -especially when it comes to animation, video games, and comics- is definitely that they leave any creators like Faust alone and don't hinder their artistic vision with corporate demands. (I'm guessing)

    Oh, and its good to see an Amazon to actually look and sound like an Amazon.

    Although, why doesn't Batgirl just ask Supergirl to fly to México get her a burrito? Unlike Supergirl she doesn't need the invisible jet.

    9jack9 because the best part of Batman the Brave and the Bold was the shorts at the start; that's why

    Also to all, I wish they had used Starfire for manic one. I know she is not as well known, but secretly heroic whilist being outwardly manic IS her personality (at least till Tamari blew up and Nightwing dumped her–twice).

    Am I the only masculine man who liked Starfire better when she was more personality than body?

    How do so many people reading this blog not know who Wondergirl is? And how inept are they that they can't work out her general status from her name?

    I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to see more of this. While not all the DC shorts appeal to me, I kinda like this one. The set up is pretty good and the voice cast is Really good. Here's hoping for more of these to fill out the new DC Nation Block until they make more shows.

    I was wondering if you watched DC Nation. you said you liked My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but you didn't have much to say about it…

    But in the end, that doesn't matter. What matters is that the showrunner for that show, Lauren Faust, moves on to different shows and does different things, in an attempt to finally get her dream project, Galaxy Girls, off the ground, and this is a nice start…

    Though I have ran into one person who at first hated it because of how it basically redesigned the characters into completely different versions of themselves, which I thought was really stupid, but I tried to be nice to her, and she eventually admitted she had higher expectations and was just disappointed by the outcome.

    Either way, I can't wait for the next Super Best Friends Forever! 😉

    Sorry bob usually i agree with you on stuff but I cant with this, this show is just annoying. Its not funny, not cute and they turned a great character A.K.A Batgirl into an idiot. its just not cool. Maybe i'm hung up on Scott Snyder's Batgirl but still…..i mean even in the original Batman The Animated series Batgirl was awesome.
