Yes, of course, I’m very excited about the WiiU – basically a jacked-up 360 controlled with an iPad that runs first-party Nintendo software too – but c’mon, how can this NOT be the highlight of E3 for me?
I agree, Bob. It's been ages since we last saw the Tanooki Suit. However, I'm waiting for the day they bring back the Hammer Suit. I don't give a damn is other people consider it a game breaker. Just seeing the Hammer Suit rendered in 3D -or even 2.5D- would make me absolutely delighted.
Huh, no comments on the WiiU? Guess he has the Overthinker for that. So far we've had the typical “hardcore” gamer reactions. Which probably means the system is going to sell like mad
I'm worried the tanooki suit won't actually make Mario fly; all we see it do in the trailer is allow Mario to glide a bit. And if it *can* fly, they should've shown it in the trailer since it's such an iconic image.
Regardless, though, I'm not too excited. Mario's still fun, but it's never felt as magical to me since Mario 64 or Sunshine (yes, I actually liked Super Mario Sunshine).
The WiiU left me veeeeerrry cautiously optimistic. It seems like Nintendo is moving in the right direction with this new console but we'll see next year.
First problem I see, though: that controller looks damned uncomfortable to hold, and placing the right analogue stick above the buttons on the right side of the console looks like a serious misstep. I would also be seriously surprised if the touchscreen turns into anything BUT an extra “TV screen” for the vast majority of third-party games.
The new Mario game looks like it's channeling a lot on Super Mario Bros. 3, which is always a bit of a shame for me since I preferred Mario World. Nonetheless, I'll probably grab it, though if the new Paper Mario releases first that may take priority.
I'm awaiting for Bob to do an overall breakdown of E3 before truly commenting on anything, but the Wii-U has me excited and not at the same time. It's reaching the point where I may have to just stop buying all three major company consoles, and while most folks have written off Nintendo, I'm getting ready to write off Microsoft (which is interesting considering I started this generation singing praises of the Xbox 360). The ONLY first party titles that do NOT REQUIRE the Kinect are a Halo remake and Gears of War sequel (and as for Halo 4, even if I was interested at this point, they'll probably shoe-horn the Kinect in somehow).
I'll get Gears 3 and Halo CE Anniversary (I've been wanting online Halo 1 co-op for so long!), but after that…I don't know if Microsoft has anything for me.
Sony's got first party titles at least, and they're trying to have a variety (new Sly Cooper! Sweet!). But if I had to choose between the Playstation brand and Nintendo brand, well, I'd probably go Nintendo.
But it would be a tough choice, considering how pleased I ended up being with Heavy Rain…
Anyway, the only problem with the Wii-U's presentation was a complete lack of actual game announcements. But that doesn't really matter right now. Unlike Sony and Microsoft, whose E3 announcements the year or two before console launch were filled with empty and broken promises, Nintendo has only really discussed features that will be final and confirmed. Right now they're just trying to generate buzz, as well as address the “problem” the Wii had: third party hardcore support.
I really don't know what to think in terms of “possibilities”, and I'm honestly hoping we don't get any cheap gimmicks from Nintendo games like Donkey Kong Country Returns is filled with (wouldn't it be neat if you could blow the flowers and reveal secrets? No, not really). But I do know using the controller as a sniper scope could be neat, and accessing my inventory via the touch screen in Darksiders II or gratuitous Zelda sequel or gratuitous Metroid sequel will also rock. I mean, basically, just think of what we've seen on the DS. OOH! Maybe we'll get a console version of Knights in the Nightmare!
I could go with that. Hell, if I aimed my gun using my finger on the touchpad, well, that would control a Hell of a lot better than the Wiimote would.
So it IS a tanooki suit, and not a racoon suit.
Also, is it just me, or did that boss Mario was fighting look like Boom Boom?

Yea, that was Boom Boom.
3DS, Wii U, Super Mario 3DS, MGS: Snake Eater, 3DS versions of various N64 games. Yea, I'm gonna be a happy boy very soon.

Please in the name of God, someone tell me that Nintendo isn't being serious with that name….anyone?

Really? Out of all the interesting, new, potentially revolutionizing sh*t Nintendo announced yesterday, you're excited about a raccoon suit? O.o
Ah well, whatever.

If you're all going to go crazy over the Tanooki suit – don't act surprised when I go nuts over classic Sonic in Sonic Generations!
It's a great time to be alive.

Looks like Bob's “lightly less insane prediction” (that the 3DS may act as a controller) could come true after all.
