“Thor 2” is subtitled “The Dark World,” and now we may know part of what that’s in reference to: Deadline reports that former Doctor Christopher Eccleston has been signed as the new main villain – Malekith. And in case you were thinking the “Thor” movies might be pulling back from the high-fantasy stuff after the character(s) turned out to be so memorable tearing up NYC in “The Avengers;” this fellow’s full name and title is Malekith the Accursed: King of The Dark Elves of Svartalfheim.
Man, that’s even fun just to type…Unlike most of the supporting/villain cast from the first film, who mainly come from the Silver Age 60s/70s “Thor” stories, Malekith originated during Walt Simonson’s legendary run on the book (considered by many to be the best era of “Thor” comics ever) in the 80s. His main “thing” is shape-shifting and illusion, but as the title implies he’s also got a whole army and realm under his command.
Yes, this is a real movie. You can get the DVD in the U.S. and it’s as great as it looks.
people think he's gonna be the solo villain but I doubt it, most of his solo arcs are too engrained with the casket of the ancient winters (which he is always holding) the plot device from Thor 1 and the Ice Giants, he's most likely just the talky hands on villain who plans on releasing Surtur the fire giant who destroys the world ala all those Sword and Sandal flicks recently (Wrath of the Titans, Immortals, etc.) that's why Hemmsworth said the villain was “Bigger then Thanos” and they're calling for people who work with fire

The Ninth Doctor is gonna be a “Thor” villain?! I think I'm gonna need something more that tissues to clean up the mess I made from reading this… XD

I always freaking love Christopher Eccleston as an actor, enjoyed him in Doctor Who, Heroes and GI Joe.

I hope they don't play up the camp value of this. I think it would be even more awesome if they gave him all these crazy qualities and costumes but then give him a devious, cunning mind to outmatch Loki.
Less David Bowie and more Gene Simmons.

Wow, I was honestly expecting Enchantress and Executioner since they're the next most recognizable Thor villains after Loki…way to go Marvel for hitting us with one I'm not at all familiar with since I don't fallow the comics that closely.

Huh. This actually worries me. I mean, I'm all for expanding the universe, but this particular villain kinda makes me think Loki won't be in it much, if at all. After all, they don't need TWO sly, skinny, foppish, shape-shifting, illusion-casting sorcerers. And I HAVE NOT YET HAD MY FILL OF TOM HIDDLESTON'S LOKI.
Plus I was kinda hoping for the Enchantress, maybe with a side of Executioner.

I would like to note that Malekith showed up in the Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon and they did a pretty good job with him there, so it's definitely doable.

There seems to be some redundancy in Malekith's title since Svartalfheim literally means Black-elf-home. Nothing wrong with a bit of redundancy of course, particularly when it sounds cool.

I was expecting Loki, or the Enchantress and the Executioner to be the villain of Thor 2.

Hahah Annonomous! I love hour analogy of Bowie and Simmons. I always thought Malekith was more of a cross between Michael Flatley and Bret Michaels. I have a feeling they will make him look cool, with normal white hair, and perhaps shadows on his face rather than two colors? Speaking of Thor, my kids lost my Blu-ray copy, so I just sent for it from my Blockbuster @Home. My Dish coworker came over to watch all of The Avengers prequel movies, just before seeing The Avengers. Blockbuster @Home really is the best way to get my Blu-ray movies for the least amount of money, and I can keep the movie as long as I want to without overage fees.
