When you pay attention to the latest neurochemical research, plus the fact that the subconscious reacts several milliseconds before the conscious mind takes credit for the action, the entire notion of “free will” starts to look the teensiest bit silly.
But yeah, I doubt the Marvel writers had this in mind when they had Immortus brainwash Ms. Marvel into bearing his child and running off with him.
I question that research's connection to free will. Is it not possible that the unconscious mind makes choices (takes into consideration past experiences, and whatever else is required for choice) even if these choices do happen a few milliseconds before realized by the conscious mind?
Hey Bob, I know you're really getting sucked into this whole feminism thing…
…but using a 30-year-old Ms. Marvel story arc as jumping-off-point to rant about rape culture… isn't that kind of shooting for the low-hanging fruit?
There are plenty of more contemporary and malicious examples you could have chosen from, and besides this is already discussed in places like Feministfrequency and Jezebel.
I get that it's called “The Big Picture” so you can take a step back and look at something with a greater overall social context, I'm just commenting on how all of your more recent content, regardless of topic, keeps leading back to the problems you have with geek culture in general.
BTW, Bob, when you include links in your videos, could you also post them below. It's not the first time I have to write a long link to check the stuff you're talking about. It's not actually a complain, but it would make going through your videos easier.
Rape and abduction aside, can I just say how happy I am to see you devoting two episodes to Ms. Marvel? I was a comic fangirl years back and Ms. Marvel always intrigued me. Probably because Rogue was my favorite X-men and that whole “Rogue stole her powers” thing. I always meant to go get some old issues of the avengers and learn more about her (I started collecting the the mid 90's so I kind of missed the Ms. Marvel boat). I never did get around to reading them. Ms. Marvel kicked butt in Marvel Ultimate Alliance though

@biomechanical923,
I don't know, man. I like the historic stuff.

I put loads of effort into my last post but blogger killed it.
Bah!
Anyway, the way rape is portrayed in the media is turning now but only a few years ago the kind of crap you'd be subjected to was infuriating.
Even mainstream stuff like James Bond movies had some questionable non-consensual stuff going on.
Also, Garth Marenghi is awesome, I didn't realise he was on the map in the US.

Cool.
I thought the stream of TV mostly went the other way.
Thanks
